Transmission brake-lock switch failed

Transmission brake-lock switch failed
I have a 2002 Accord SE and the brake switch that keeps you from putting the car in gear if you don't have the brakes engaged, has failed. I now have to use the override on the shift column every time I want to take the car out of park. The stealer is quoting me about $30 for the switch and $70 to put it in. Is this a hard thing to do myself? I'd love to save the $70 bucks.
Thanks,
Bob

RE: Transmission brake-lock switch failed
IT DEPENDS ON YOUR MECHANICAL ABILITY, YOU ARE REPLACING A BRAKE SWITCH WHICH IS LOCATED BEHIND THE BRAKE PEDAL, MAINLY UNPLUGING IT AND REMOVING THEN REPLACING. BY THE WAY ARE YOU BRAKE LIGHTS NOT WORKING?

RE: Transmission brake-lock switch failed
Not that I'm aware of! I'll have to check if my brake lights are working.
As far as mechanical ability, it's moderate. I know my way around a wrench, and have done some minor things myself.
If the brake lights are working, is this a different problem?
Thanks,
Bob

RE: Transmission brake-lock switch failed
do it yourself,, you can do it in less than 15 minutes
all you need is a 14 mm open end wrench and a small screwdriver to unclip the plug
anyho, under dash at the brake pedal, unclip the plug, if the clip is at the top and you cannot access it, loosen the 14mm nut and turn the switch till you can access the clip ,,,,once the nut is loose and plug unclipped unscrew the brake switch,,,,,,,
when reinstalling it , make sure that when brake is up, it will push the nipple on the switch all the way in,,tighten the 14mm nut, reconnect the plug and you are done

RE: Transmission brake-lock switch failed
Thanks deserthonda. I checked this weekend, and my brake lights are definitely out. I'll have to take a look and see if I'm able to get to the switch. Then I'll order the part.
Thanks again,
Bob
