Transmission interchange?
I have an '85 Accord 4 door with a 5 speed manual. The car has a carbureated 1.8L 4 cylinder.
4th gear is completely out in the transmission, you put it in in 4th and it's like you put it in neutral. It also likes to pop out of 3rd, and with the car nearing 400,000 miles, it's time for a new clutch (clutch last replaced at 200k).
I'm just wondering what all years I can get a 5 speed from that will be a direct bolt in, or require very few modifications. The '86-'89 body style is by far easier to find in local junkyards, many with under 200,000 miles and the junkyard will give a 30 day warranty on the transmission. The engine looks pretty much the same in the '86-'89 cars, so I am assuming the transmission is too?
Thanks!

RE: Transmission interchange?
Looks like only 84 and 85 model years are donors. Check car-part.com for transmissions near your zip code.
You could overhaul your trans or buy a rebuilt, but would probably cost more than a used trans. However, you will not know how good a trans you have until you spend all the effort to install. If you have to do the job twice, an overhaul price may look good. Tough choices.
good luck

RE: Transmission interchange?
That's strange only 84 and 85. I wonder what the difference is in 86-89? They look totally identical on the outside. I wonder if it's just some stupid little difference that throws the cross references off. car-part shows two of them in 84 Accords within 100 miles from me, one for $100 and the other for $150. My local Pull-A-Part sells them for about 60 bucks with the same 30 day warranty as the place on car-part offers.. hmmmm
