Default Very low mileage on new Honda Accord 2012 EXL model

Hello All,

I bought 2012 Honda Accord EXL 4 cylinder automatic car last year in September. Mine is 18.5 Gallons tank and I only get 300 miles full tank in the city. I use it 30-40%% highway and 60-70% city. I went to the Honda Service center and they asked where I fill the gas. I mentioned Costco and they blamed that Costo is a low end gas station and that I should only fill gas at Shell or equivalent. They also said that I will have to pay $150 for the inspection if it is related to the bad gas. I came back and now filled the gas from Shell but no improvement yet.Waiting for the tank to get empty before I can go back to the service center. I was told to try 3 full tanks before I visit them but I am afraid my warranty time may get over.
All my other friends have new and good cars and they fill in Costco too but they never faced any mileage issues. I need expert advise on how to move forward with this issue. My car is still in warranty and I am just getting 17 miles per gallon which is not even comparable with 10 years old car. Any help will be appreciated.

17 is on the low side especially for combo driving city/hwy. i usually just run around town and get 21-22 mpg just city and can get as much as 31 on the fwy only runs.

Keep in mind that the tank size is irrelevant when it comes to fuel economy; the metric we really need is how many gallons you typically put into the tank every time you fill up. Better still, track at least two or three tanks with the exact miles driven and the exact amount of fuel added when you fill; add the miles and gallons, and then divide the total miles driven by the total number of gallons consumed.

Also keep in mind that even the most fuel efficient car in the world will return less than ten miles per gallon given enough excessive idling and/or driving in very heavy traffic.

Another factor to consider is how long you operate the car every time you start it. If you start, drive two miles and then turn in off, your mileage will be poor regardless of what car you're driving due to the fact that a cold engine runs excessively rich.

Thanks for your response. I filled 18 gallons last 3 times and set the odometer to 0. Exactly at 300 -305 miles, I filled the tank and it took 17.5 to 18 gallons. This must give the results, right.

Also, I do drive 2 miles one side daily to office. You think that would cause this much issue? Also, I had 10 years old honda accord before and the it used to give more than 22 miles per gallon for the same daily commute.

Your car has an 18.5 gallon tank and you're putting in 18? Are you "milking" the pump and filling to the brim, or are you pulling the pump handle out after it clicks off the first time? Note, filling beyond the auto click off can damage the evap system in your car.

As for your two mile commute, yup, that's a huge reason why your fuel economy is bad. Take your car on a road trip and you'll most likely get over 30 mpg.
