well...it wouldn't start cold yesterday. pulled dist. cap off and looked at rotor button. didn't look real bad...didn't look real good...replaced it anyway and put on a new dist cap...it fired right up. today it started this morning first thing and started a few other times throughout the day with no problems. went to start it about 4:00 this afternoon after sitting about an hour and it just turned over...waited about 5 minutes and it fired right up. very frustrating. after putting the new module in last week, it started every time for 5 days, now it's back to what it was doing before replacing the module. the module failed the "threshold" test last week which is why I replaced it.

Turn the key to the II position, but do not try to start the car. When the check engine light turns on for the bulb check, the fuel pump should turn on for about two seconds as well. The fuel pump makes a slight buzzing/whirling sound from the back seat, so turn off the radio, blower, etc... and listen carefully.

Try this when the car is working, so you know what the fuel pump sounds like. Do the same thing when the car will not start to see if the fuel pump is not turning on.

so I could have two seperate problems with identical symptoms within a week? I guess you never say never, but I think I would have a better chance of hitting the lottery twice in two draws...lol...I'll take your advice and see if I hear it. thanks

The original ICM may have been working properly.

You will have to figure out if you are missing fuel or spark when the car doesn't start. Listening for the fuel pump is a simple and quick place to start.

it was hooked up to a machine at autozone and it failed 4 of the 7 "tests". there were 7 red and 7 green lights on this panel and after it did whatever it did to test it, 4 were red and 3 were green. I've still got the old ICM, guess I could put it back in and see if it starts???

To narrow down the problem, you may want to leave the new one in there. I guess it is up to you about replacing the ICM.

local dealer said the next time it won't start to tap on the main relay under the dash and see if it starts...sure enough it did!! so if it was the relay all along that was working then not working...why would my ICM have gone out? just a coincidence they both went bad within a week? or autozone has a faulty tester that says bad when they may or may not be?
