Swapping the engine, the engine and transmission, or just the transmission itself isn't really the bigger issue. Where you're going to run into trouble is the clutch pedal assembly and the linkage (which I believe is hydraulic).

Flipping into what I call "Standard advice mode"...

Your situation isn't at all unusual (pick pretty much any forum, this one, other Honda forums, and forums for Toyotas, Mazdas... and you'll find posts from folks wanting to do the same thing as you); the best advice I can offer is to keep the car you have, keep it stock which will keep its resale value as high as possible, and then save your hard earned money for a car you really want (you know, more powerful, better handling, nicer compliment of goodies, more prestige). Once you're ready to go, sell it for as much as you can get (as I said before, cars which are bone stock fetch higher resale prices than cars which have been mofified), and buy the car of your dreams.

I'll argue the other way. Not because I really believe it, but just to play devil's advocate...

With experience and a bunch of tools, it's an interesting project to swap in a manual transmission. I said PROJECT. If you're simply interested in the end result of having a manual, then trade cars like shipo says. That's the path that really makes sense for most reasonable people.

But if you enjoy the PROJECT, take some time & do the homework. There's a lot of piddling little parts to change, from the instrument cluster to the pedal assembly, to half the guts underneath the console/shiftlever. And you'll end up with a little bit of a frankenstien because you probably won't change the car's wiring harness. You'll do a little ghetto work for brackets to hold the clutch hydraulic line. But it can be interesting if you can afford to be without a car for awhile.

I think there's 1 or 2 threads around here about swapping to manual. I know there's a couple regulars that have done it. And they have stories about the headaches they went through.

Its not impossible by any means, but its definitely not something for a novice. And even for a pro it is by no means a fun job. If you could find a crashed or blown car on craigslist from your year with a manual transmission you could swap it all over and it would be cheap. Just time consuming.

I cannot argue with either of those two comments; I *wish* I had the time to convert my Accord to a 6-Speed manual; if I could then the only thing left to complain about the car would be the lack of an Outside Air Temperature indicator in the instrument cluster.

The prelude came with an automatic transmission that you may be able to swap. Using the 96 prelude ECU will keep your car obd2. I remember reading something about the prelude engine having 180 hp with the automatic transmission, but that could be bad information I read.

Take your time and do your homework so you will encounter less headaches when modifying the car.
