Default Why would a car not have a thermostat?

It doesn't have to do with Hondas, but I know you guys can help me out.

My fiance recently purchased a 2001 Volvo V70 T5. She has had it 2 or 3 months now. I took it on a long trip recently(about 300 miles). I noticed that the temp gauge seemed to be rather low(I have a 2001 S60 T5 which is basically the same car just not a station wagon) and it fluctuated a lot too.

So I told her the thermostat was probably going bad. On the way home the check engine light came on. When I read it it said bad thermostat, which I wasnt surprised. The big shocker came when I went to replace the thermostat. I found that there was not one in it.

I put one in and it seems to be working fine now. But why would it not have one? I can't think of a reason as to not have one.

It was also weird that it had been driven for 2-3 months and the CEL never came on. Its probably just that its starting to get cold now.

The prior owner would have removed it. Don't sweat it.

My dad had removed the thermostat from his station wagon for a reason that I can't recall.
He was good at many things, but not cars ...

Some folks see a slighlty high temp and think removing the thermostat is a legitimate fix.

I've seen some posts w/ apparent belief this will improve acceleration performance.

good luck

Some people take it out when they have a overheating problem due to a bad or stuck thermostat. However, when that is done, it is generally detrimental to fuel economy, etc. as it takes longer for the car to heat up when cold. The proper repair would have been to replace it.

The following post is pretty spot on:
