Default Why would my 99 accord wiper travel be off?

My wipers travel too far, slamming into my hood on the down and eventually going off the drivers side window on the up. When I first start the car they seem to work fine prior to putting the car in drive. I was told I need a new wiper transmission and it will cost me about $250 - $300 for the part and labor. Does this sound accurate or could the fix be simpler than replacing the entire transmision? Maybe the motor or linkage?

Might be a loose pivot bushing somewhere in the linkage. Looks like some of those things are available as parts.

Until you start taking it apart for a look, it's hard to say WHICH linkage is loose.
