Default TRANSMISSION 'D4' ISSUE

I have a 92 Accord LX 4 Door, auto and air with 177,000 miles. I am trying to track down the problem which causes the 'D4 signal light' to stay on at startup and when driving. In addition, the 'brake signal light' stays on and the car won't go into first gear from a stop. It will move but I believe it is starting from second gear and upshifts fine from there. Any ideas out there? This car is a bit ugly but is decent transportation. I'd hate to part it out with gas prices what they are today...

get the codes, there is a writeup on how to get them in the diy section. the vss is a common thing to go out.

for the brakes, the level might be low or sometimes it will stay on if the e brake handle isnt tight enough

[8D] I didn't get the codes but a quick foray into the TCU box revealed the root of the problem. A few resistors, a capacitor and who knows what were fried. I obtained a rebuilt unit and put in in. That solved the problem except for the brake light issue. So I am guessing the two problems may not be related. I have received other ideas but the e-brake is one that I had not heard of. I'll check that out tomorrow. Thanks for your helpful hints.
