UPDATE!! UPDATE!! UPDATE!!
I cannot stress this enough. You must update your virus protection as soon as it comes out no matter how annoying the pop up things are. New viruses are made everyday by people who don't have lives and have enough time on their hands to make programs that will destroy your computer. I have made the same mistake before and its not pretty when the virus deletes essential programs/files like the ones in the system(the files that actually enable your computer to work).

Check out Blackviper. http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm
Disabling those services really makes the pc boot up and run faster. Also some of the program might still lauch even if you disable them in msconfig but if you do it in services.msc they won't start up at all.

Under msconfig you can disable services as well if need be, but if you do that without knowing what you are doing there is the potential for massive issues.Very good link though, it has all the information to do it safely.
