Default Haynes or Chiltons?

Just starting out as a DIY guy. Heard of and used Chiltons a bit but recently discovered Haynes.

What do y'all think is better? This might be a common question or already have it's thread but I didn't see one so I thought I'd throw it out there.

so either or the Haynes description of the manual seemed like it might help more for someone in my situation. I can get Chiltons online at the King County Library here in WA state but I think I might pick up a Haynes manual just to try it out. Just some initial thoughts.

Never tried Chiltons, but I've got a couple Hayne's manuals and just purchased a third one. I like them.

Yeah, I think I am going to give Haynes a go. Might pick up a Chiltons as well and I'm sure one is just as good as the other they seem like they've both been around for awhile.

Neither. The best shop manual is published by Helm; it's the "factory" book.

It's pricey, but very detailed. I guess you can find electronic copies on ebay & elsewhere. Look at the "common DIY" thread over in the General-Tech area.

Thumbs up

I like the factory manual....but that is me.....PS- see the sticky at the top of general tech - DIY Common Threads. In that there is a link to a manual you can download for free.

EDIT: and I see Jim posted as I was typing

This manual from helminc is intriguing. Not a bad price either for something that I am sure I will use and the more detailed the better.

Looks like I've got some options in front of me.

At the end of the day, Jim is correct....the Helm's can not be beat, IMO.

Chilton and Haynes - here is some info for you, there is one company that ownes both of these brands...go figure. Anyway, over the years they had some pretty good stuff....but the more you get into things, well the other manuals will be far better.

Well shoot, I've always lived by the rule that you get what you pay for. Figure if it's both feet in on this project and I trust all of your judgements maybe I'll just pick up the Helm's manual
