Hybrid V Diesel for highway driving

Hybrid V Diesel for highway driving
Good morning
A friend who lives in NH is pondering whether to buy a hybrid car or not. She is mainly concerned with fuel economy. Most of her driving is single/dual carriage way driving over fairly long distances. She drives about 80 highway miles a day to work and back.
Her friends are trying to twist her arm to buy a hybrid. I'm suggesting to her that a diesel may be better for highway driving. Just a couple of questions:
1) I am assuming that hybrid is only really fuel saving in built up areas with lots of stop and start? Or does it also save you on the highway? For prolonged highway driving diesel in my opinion is a winner.
2) What is the situation with availability of diesels to purchase in the USA? And can you fill up at any gas station i and around NH? Whilst they are now the king in Europe, I'm not so sure they have caught on in the USA so much.
Cheers

You're correct about hybrids & motorways. Hybrids have the advantage in stop & go driving. Diesel would be great for highways.
Honda does not offer a diesel engine in USA. At all. They never have, so far.
But there's plenty of diesel cars around, mostly Benz & VW/Audi. Even BMW is offering diesels now. And plenty of diesel pickup trucks. Most gas stations (80% or more) have diesel fuel around here, but I don't live near NH. I bet she would have very little trouble finding diesel fuel.
