Default Lightning..!

Late Wednesday afternoon a thunderstorm came thru... and my chimney got hit by lightning &blew up!
Now that it's over I guess we were lucky. It could have been much worse.

That's nuts! I'm glad that you and your fam are ok but WOW! Does insurance cover that kind of thing? Or are you going to be repairing it yourself?

You have a very nice looking home JimBlake, minus the damage. Were you there when the chimney got hit or did you come home to it?

Insurance coverage (good thing...)

My wife was walking down the stairs when it hit. She was knocked down the last couple steps (sore but no real injury).

I got a panicked phone call from here just before the fire dept showed up. She said we don't have a chimney, so I was picturing a big smoking hole in the side of the house.

Other than the chimney,a fewsolid-state electronic things are fried. Fire dept pretty quickly ruled out any smoldering inside the walls.Like I said, it could have been so much worse.

Glad to hear everyone is ok. Thank God for homeowners insurance right? And sir_nasty, lightning is always covered on standard homeowners policies. Unless you have some kind of crazy policy that excludes it, but I wouldn't see any reason for an insurance company to do that since lightning strikes are so rare.

I wasn't to sure about homeowners policies but I knew that some places on auto insurance won't pay what they consider to be a "act of god" such as a tree falling on your car etc. But I didn't know if homeowner policies were the same...

On every policy I have seen, homeowners, commercial property, and auto,an "act of God", or the politically correct "act of nature"is always covered. Except for flood on a homeowners policy (that coverage usually must be purchased throught the federal government or a flood specific policy).

Several people asked the same thing about disallowing 'acts of God', so ??? But we were talking with our insurance adjuster within a couple hours, and it's covered.
