I guess this is off-topic, though it's about the Accord I've been posting about. So, I decided to sell it, basically for parts. I'm already nervous about these guys off CL coming to my house while I live alone and stuff, but now things are seeming really shady, which scares me more.

Basically, I'm in NH, and I read on the DMV website that you fill out their bill of sale form and have it notarized at your town hall. Ok, that makes it easy for me, I thought, as I downloaded the form.

But...I've had a couple guys contact me that were pissing themselves over buying the car, one sight-unseen, and as soon as I mention that they have to sign at the town hall (which requires them to show their ID,) boom, end of deal. I know that's what it is, because I just got an email from the last guy saying:

Why else would they do that if they're not freakin wanted by the law or something? Somebody please tell me some other legitimate answer, because I gave this last guy my address, and he wouldn't even tell me his name. And since I put the notarization thing into my ad, no one's contacted me.

Oh, I also told him I wouldn't let him take the plates.

No more direct address's with them..meet them at a local McDonalds, daytime only and the Notary deal has to be or don't do it.
Cash only, no checks..and have a big guy you know with you when making the deal..
That's my suggestion and I'm sticking to it.

Thanks, but I don't really have any big guy friends. Well, I do, but he's being a dick. Anyway, I don't have any other friend or family close by. I can't meet them, because the car's unregistered, so I can't drive it; they have to come here. Oh, and the paperwork has my name and address, too.

I wish I knew someone who could help me do this... Hmm. Maybe my neighbor downstairs. He's an ok guy, big, around during the day - I just don't know him hardly at all. I'm really socially phobic, and I think he is, too. I guess for my own safety, I should work up the nerve to ask him just to come outside when they come to look (if they ever again come to look.)

I'm going to ask the town hall if the notarization is required and what they think about these guys running off. The DMV site seemed pretty clear that the notarization is required, as is their official bill of sale. Even if it's not required, I'm not sure I want the cops knocking on my door in a week asking why my car was used in a robbery or something, because there's no real proof that I sold it!

 

Ask the local cops whether you should be nervous about the situation. Just the fact that they WON'T go to town hall & show ID is a BIG red flag in my mind. Exactly like you said in your last sentence. That's why YOU also need to keep a copy of the signed bill-of-sale.

You said you sent them your address? How did you do that? Got his email or phone# (caller-ID)?

 

They want the car with an open title/bill of sale, so that they never have to register it or pay taxes.
You will be liable for taxes as long as the title/ownership is in your name.
Also they can rebuild it and resell it in the future and pay no taxes.

 

Just going through the things replied. Did some reading and talked to a friend:

I did re-contact him. I found out that for a car this age, the notarization is not required, though an official bill of sale is. There are no titles for cars 15 years or older. So it's not as suspicious that he didn't want to (assuming) bother to notarize it. We also don't have to pay taxes on cars in NH, so I don't think taxes are an issue. I'm not sure if he wants to use it for parts or drive it, but I'm making him fill out the info on-site and show me his ID, if he wants to play ball. And I also informed him that he'll have to get temp plates (which will still make him have to go to the town hall with ID.) We'll see what he replies. I'm doubting he'll answer in the positive with the stipulation I made about the plates. BTW, thx, I'll make a copy of the bill of sale, whoever it is; I was wondering about that.

Oh, I've only got his Yahoo address, so that's probably a waste if I turn up a corpsicle in the local river... :/

I also live in NH, and have sold some things on craigslist. I will say that I have meant some pretty sketchy people selling things on there, but have never had an issue. A lot of times its people from mass that come up to get cars/parts.

I wish I could assist you in being the "big tough guy" but I live in Keene on the Vermont border.

When I have bought cars I didn't get anything notarized, just did up a quick bill of sale. But I would not let them use your plates, next thing you know the cops will show up at your door asking about whatever crime they committed.

 

No titles on cars 15 years or older???That sounds really sketchy... Anyone could steal a car and then just sell it to you with a bill of sale...

How does your registration work??? Do you just need a bill of sale and proof of insurance??? This is crazy to me... Do you even recieve a title when you originally purchase the car??? If so what stops someone from selling a car thats not paid off yet??? Sorry about the questions, its just crazy to me...
