There's something called "break in." Thieves "break in" to steal what they see inside a car. It does not need to be outside of the car. If a theif saw something they want inside your car a simple door is not going to stop them from entering your vehicle.
They call it 'Smash and grab' Any time you get out of your car you should keep everything out of sight. The first thing I do when I buy a car is get an alarm and now the last two cars have 2-way alarms. There is a guy on another forum im at that has 24' wheels and about 8k in stereo equipment but no alarm. Needless to say his wheels just got stolen.

This is sort of making me wonder, if someone is vandalizing you vehicle, does this give you a right to stab/punch them? I have a wonderful knife that I now carry in my car "just in case".

It is in Florida! If someone breaks into your home, you don't even need to see a weapon, and you have the right to defend yourself. Even if the defense ends in death. I'm not 100% on the details, but Jeb Bush passed this bill a couple of years ago. It boils down to you can't be prosecuted for murder for defending your home. A lot better than California's new gun policy. I'm not saying everyone should own a gun, but when a criminal knows the chances are slim that you have a gun b/c they're ilegal; they're not going to be as scared breaking into your house. You may not have a gun in California, but criminals will always find a way to get them. Whereas here a criminal in Florida that is informed on the law may think twice before breaking in if its legal to get blow away with a 10 Guage.

it make sense that you would want to stab somebody who is stealing parts from your car but i wouldn't risk it. their have been some outrageous cout cases where the criminal sue's the victim. god bless america
