Looking to buy a 2002 Accord but I'm confused with the advice I've been getting?
Hey guys,
I'm looking to buy a used car and saw this one:
2002 HONDA ACCORD***make me an offer***
Here are edmund/kbb values for it:
http://www.edmunds.com/honda/accord/...e-results.html
http://www.kbb.com/honda/accord/2002...=private-party
So I asked somewhere what I should offer for it if it checks out with a mechanic and got this response:
It's technically worth $4500 in its current condition, but keep in mind that the car is now over 10 years old and that most of its life is over (even Hondas don't usually go past 200k without major repairs needed). Personally, I wouldn't pay more than $2500 for any car this old with this many miles unless it was a sought-after sports car or a truck that I could use to make money with. This is neither and you will need to overhaul the engine and/or transmission soon. Find one with lower miles and pay a little more money for it (they don't bring much more money with low miles when they're this old, so it's the way to go).
That makes me not even want to try to get the car at all because I'm pretty sure the seller won't take anything $2000-$3000!!
How much truth is there in what he said?
Thanks!

I think it's a fair price, maybe $4600. If it lasts till 200,000 miles, that's 10cents a mile. Then there is still some salvage value there.
Even a 5 year old car will cost $1200 a year in repairs and maintenance, tires etc.
Just because it's a Honda, it doesn't mean it's "maintenance free".
It's a 6cyl auto though, not quite as durable as the 4cyl manual.

Are you aware of the transmission issues with 98-02 accords? If not, I strongly suggest you do sone research on that. I, personally, would never buy an automatic 98-02 Accord because I would constantly fear the slushbox of a transmission Honda put in there would fail at any time...
