if you have 17 inch rims as long as all your tires maintain stock diameter you can still use the spare tire that came with the car. If your diameter exceeds stock then you'll need a full size spare (I.E. a rim with a tire that will be the same diameter as your 17's)

If the reason you are getting 17' rims is because you have larger brakes, or are going to get larger brakes, than a stock spare will not work unless it's rim size is large enough to accomodate the brakes. But I would personally sugesst getting a fifth rim and tire, that way if you have to use a spare, you won't ruin your image by driving around with a steely on the car.

Yes a smaller donut or stock tire will work as a spare with 17's, the thing I was trying to say is that if you have bigger brakes, the stock donut or tires may not work. Example: My 92 Accord came with 15 inch wheels and 10.5 inch brakes. Donut works fine for that setup. But I now have 13.5 inch big brakes, and the caliper prevents the stock 15's or donut from mounting. That is one reason I went for 17's myself. Plus they look really kick ***.
